Antoni Hardonk thwarts attempted L.A. robbery

antoni-hardonk-2Score one for the good guys, finally.

Antoni Hardonk, a heavyweight who competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, had just finished a training session last month in Los Angeles near Los Angeles International Airport.

He was talking with his attorney, Nima Safapour, when three young men approached him. They asked if he had money so they could buy cigarettes.

“My feeling is I want to help someone if I can, so I pulled out my wallet,” Hardonk said.

But he had no change or small bills, so he told the men, whom he estimated to be between 18 and 20 years old, that he couldn’t help them.

That’s when one of them pulled out a homemade knife, which he said had about a two-inch blade, and demanded his wallet. Hardonk, who is 6 feet 4 and around 250 pounds, was surprised.

But not only is he a professional figher, he was a security guard and a bouncer in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He didn’t frighten or lose his composure.

“I said, ‘What? Are you crazy? I’m not giving you my wallet,’” Hardonk said.

At that stage, one of the other men said, “He’s serious. We’ll hurt you if you don’t.”

Hardonk continued to remain calm and told the men if they wanted his wallet, they’d have to come and get it. The men had second thoughts and left. At that point, Safapour suggested it would be wise if he were to drive Hardonk home instead of allowing him to walk by himself.

Only a very short distance away, Safapour eyed the same three men surrounding a woman. Safapour decided to call the police, because he knew the men were up to no good and the likelihood of something bad happening was increasing. The woman was saved when the men turned their attention on a man who was walking by himself. They went to him and more aggressively demanded his wallet, eventually wrestling with him and taking it.

Hardonk was watching from the car, about 80 to 100 feet away, when he saw them harassing the man. He jumped out of the car and began to run over to try to help the man, whom he did not know.

He wanted to make sure, though, that the man was being robbed and was shouting, “Is that your wallet?” as he was running toward the incident in progress.

Hardonk knocked over two of the men, but the third, who had the victim’s wallet, took off running. Hardonk followed. The man who had the wallet dropped it and the trio managed to jump over a fence and into a thicket of trees and get away.

As Hardonk thought about the incident later, he realized it might have been best just to cooperate.

“In a similar situation in the future, it would probably be better just to give them the money and be done with that,” he said. “Obviously, I had much better (fighting) skills, but is it worth the risk? They could have had a gun, other knives, who knows?

“But I’m stubborn. And I fight to earn my money and that’s a hard way to make a living. And I’m not just going to give it away to guys like that.”

Though he knew he took a large risk by chasing the suspects down after they had taken the other man’s wallet, he said he has no regrets about that.

Too many people would do nothing for fear of not wanting to be involved. Hardonk’s attitude is dramatically different.

“I believe if you can do something to help someone else, you should,” Hardonk said. “We’re all here and we should all try to help each other if we can. It’s the right thing to do. I just did what I thought was right.”

Los Angeles police told Hardonk and Safapour that there were three similar incidents on the same block in the same week. No arrests have been made.

“Really young guys, and I think they were probably on drugs or something,” Hardonk said. “It’s too bad. But I didn’t think it was right just to stand by and do nothing.”

UFC threatens unsigned fighters

During this year’s E3, EA announced EA Sports MMA, a new mixed-martial arts fighting franchise EA hopes will be a major contender against THQ’s UFC series. And while the tension is sure to ramp up once MMA gets closer to release, there seems to already be some preliminary rumbling going on behind the scenes.

Evil Avatar
reports that the confirmed word on the street is that any non-UFC-affiliated fighter who signs on to appear in EA’s MMA will “forever be banned for fighting in the UFC.”

Given the critical and financial success of THQ’s recent UFC 2009: Undisputed, it’s hardly surprising that the UFC would want to ensure it maintains first right of refusal with regards to unsigned talent. Plus, UFC is the dominant force for mixed-martial arts, so if prospective fighters want the most exposure, there’s really only one place they can go. And I find it hard to believe that any young fighter would want to jeopardize his entire future just to appear in an EA-published mma game when he could simply appear in THQ’s game and fight on mma’s biggest stage.

When I contacted EA to find out its take on these reports (which could end up being quite an interesting battle if the UFC stands behind this policy), an EA representative simply said, “We have no comment regarding the alleged UFC threats to fighters as it pertains to EA Sports MMA.”

This response was to be expected, especially for as fresh as these allegations are, and for as potentially damaging this situation could be for EA’s new franchise. Expect to see plenty more about this whole mess in the near future.

Ramon Rodriguez to Have Bigger Role in “Transformers 3″

Ramon Rodriguez, who was cast in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” as Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) comic relief college roomate, might have a much bigger role in the third installment.

Director Michael Bay hinted that he has big plans for Rodriguez, who turned out to be a great find. “I’ve worked with big stars, people like Will Smith, Sean Connery and Bruce Willis, but casting is a weird thing, it takes you places you don’t expect,” said Bay. “We went looking for a sidekick in this movie, Shia’s sidekick, and we find this new kid who really pops on screen. I think he’s going to have a real bright career. It’s great to work with big stars, but it’s always fun to discover people.

Ramon also recalled his audition with Michael Bay at his office. “For 90 minutes, he had me jumping, running, diving over the furniture in his office — that was the audition,” said Rodriguez. “I was drenched in sweat. He told me, ‘OK, hide behind the desk!’ ‘Now, run over here!’ And man, I was looking in his eyes, and he was enjoying it. He’s got a passion for action.

Paramount Pictures previously announced that the third “Transformers” movie would hit theaters on July 1st, 2011. But Bay quickly rejected the release date, claiming that he needs a break. He instead thinks that the new movie would appear in theaters by 2012.

Illegal Downloading Just Got More Difficult

LA Times is reporting that The Pirate Bay, the most notorious website for illegal music and movie downloading, has agreed to go legit by letting Global Gaming Factory acquire it for around $8 million.

Hans Pandeya, CEO of Global Gaming Factory, said he intends to cooperate with studios and record labels to turn Pirate Bay into a copyright-friendly, legal business. And Pandeya already has an idea of how to turn the site’s 20 million users, who are accustomed to getting content for free, into paying customers.

To compete with free file sharing, you have to beat it,” he said. “What’s better than zero? Well, that’s paying somebody $1.

Global Gaming Factory plans to pay Pirate Bay users to let their computers be part of a worldwide peer-to-peer system. Participating computer owners could use the money deposited into their account to buy and download songs, TV shows or movies.

No Action for Nick Fury in “Iron Man 2″

Samuel L Jackson recently made a deal with Marvel to appear as Nick Fury in nine of the studio’s upcoming films, including “Iron Man 2,” “Captain America,” “Thor” and The Avengers.”

Now, MTV News caught up with Jackson to get an updated on “Iron Man 2.” The actor revealed that he has already finished filming his scenes, which include Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johannson.

When asked if he will be involved in action sequences, Jackson replied: “Not this time, not yet. We still haven’t moved Nick Fury into the bad-ass zone. He’s still just kind of a talker.

Jackson added that fans will have to wait until “The Avengers” to see Fury kick some ass. “Looking forward to that, yeah,” he said.

Heath Ledger Tried to Sabotage “The Dark Knight”?

Vanity Fair article decided to take a closer look at Heath Ledger, including the reason for his decision to play The Joker in last year’s “The Dark Knight.”

According to Ledger’s agent Steven Alexander and cinematographer/friend Nicola Pecorini, the actor had a pay-or-play deal on “Knight,” which means that he would be compensated no matter how terrible he ends up being. This gave Ledger the freedom to do what he wanted with The Joker.

But the real decision to take the role was because of the film’s unusually long shoot, which would give Ledger an excuse to turn down other offers. And since he was guaranteed to collect a paycheck, Ledger was hoping that his performance would be so “far-out” that he would end up being fired and become the beneficiary of a lengthy, paid vacation.

His agent added that while Ledger wanted to get paid, he didn’t want to be part of the massive blockbuster that “The Dark Knight” turned out to be. “[Ledger] was always hesitant to be in a summer blockbuster, with the dolls and action figures and everything else that comes with one of those movies,” Alexander explained. “He was afraid it would define him and limit his choices.
