Iran to ban some toys.

April 29th, 2008 · No Comments · Toys

Whatever your views on Iran, it must be very difficult with popular culture so westernised, to protect your own culture. Asia seems to manage this by taking Western concepts and “managa-ising” them in a kind of openness that has seen a lot of Asian popular culture making its way into Western culture.

That said whilst I can accept that some characters like the jingoist Captain America or Babrie with her fashion might conflict with Iranian culture and values, but I have to say I’m not sure how characters like Spider-man and Harry Potter could impact a devote Islamic culture such as Iran. Anyone know?

I think Iran’s answer is to make heroes every bit as interesting as Spider-Man or Batman but with Iranian values. If it could be done in a non-political way (one of the reasons I’ve never liked Captain America), I think a lot of people in the West would want to know more about these characters. Iranian superheroes anyone?

Of course, the big issue with culture whether it’s based on nation or race or anything is that culture by it’s very nature likes to absorb.

Whilst I know all of us at some time or other has complained about finding toys, imagine how bad it must be to be a toy collector in Iran - imagine you had to smuggle your toys.
