According to IESB, Marvel Vice Chairman Peter Cuneo has confirmed that Sony has made the payment to renew their rights to make the fourth “Spider-Man” film.

As far as Spider-man 4, it’s really up to Sony, it’s up to them, most likely scenario is 2010 or 2011 but we can’t speak for them and I think, that we don’t know,” Cuneo explained. “They have given us their re-up payment for that film so you know they’re going to make it within a reasonable timeframe. Sony may be looking at some issues with the cast and so on, I think they have to make some decisions.

Whether Sam Raimi will return to director or Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst will return to star is still unknown, but the fact that Sony gave Marvel their re-up payment, it puts the studio in the position to act quickly, before the rights expire again. The site assumes that an official announcement about “Spider-Man 4″ and “Spider-Man 5″ will be made either late this year or early next year.
