Back in June of last year, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that early work on the fourth “Beverly Hills Cop” movie has started. At that point, a writer has not been hired, but Eddie Murphy was considering reprising the role of Alex Foley, the Detroit cop in pursuit of a murder, who finds himself dealing with the very different culture of Beverly Hills.
Today, IESB reports that Murphy has officially signed on and that director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand) is now in negotiations to helm. Bonaventura is still pushing the film forward and if everything goes well, production will begin in 2009 for a summer 2010 release.
The first “Beverly Hills Cop” movie was released in 1984 and went on to earn a whopping $316 million. The sequel was released three years later (1987) and was able to bring in $300 million. Finally, in 1994, the third film was released, earning only $119 million in theaters, but on a $50 million budget.
