“The Frustrated Cartoonist” new blog

August 9th, 2008 · No Comments · Comics

Excuse the lack of comics this week, and weekend. It’s been a bit crazy around Frustrated Central. There are comics being made, and so forth, however, the means of putting them online has been delayed for this past week. I’m sure there’ll be a steady flow from here on out, starting Monday. We have all been trying to adjust our schedules to the new workload. Along with a new workout routine for trying to get in shape for miscellaneous reasons, there’s a lot of scheduling to do. Plus, I have to be sure to put in my schedule NOT to watch the Olympics. How long is this crap going to be wasting channel 8 on my television?

One thing I’ve noticed recently is how great the cartooning industry is in terms of not developing stupid trends. Unlike the music industry, cartoons pretty much can be whatever they want, and they don’t fizzle away like music. What exactly am I talking about? Well, nothing too interesting, but here I go:

I’m basically talking (er, actually typing) about bands and how the majority of them lack substance and they don’t remain popular. Comics, they can stand the test of time. Look around you. I keep seeing on television (except on channel 8, because of the damn Olympics) Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers. I see thousands of tweens getting their training bras in a bind screeching at these nitwits. Don’t they realize in about three years these ‘bands’ aren’t even going to be up for consideration for playing in the local strip mall. They don’t last, yet they are so freakin’ popular right now. Why is it comics don’t get a Backstreet Boys type comic strip that fades after a few years? Comics don’t really have a moment when they’re the bomb (as I’m sure a measly Jonas Brother would say), and then they become unpopular and considered obsolete. You know, if you think about the time when you enjoyed New Kids On the Block, you kind of consider pretty silly. However, when you think back to the time when you had a Garfield comic hanging up on your door, it’s really no big deal. If you had a George Michael bumper sticker though, I’d really evaluate your interest, even if you were a kid.

Sure, comic strips have their moments when they’re talked about a lot. I remember when Dilbert hit the stage. That’s all you heard about in the comic world: Dilbert. But, even though he debuted big, that strip is still around. Backstreet Boys? Well, if they are around still, you really don’t hear of them selling out Madison Square Garden.

That’s what I love about the comic industry. They sink or swim. Either it’s long lasting, or it doesn’t last. It doesn’t have that disposition like music, where it’s popular one day and crap the next.

So, if you get something good going, ride it out to the finish line! The Frustrated Cartoonist is becoming increasingly more frustrated daily, so if it’s something that’s going to stick, there’s a lot of frustrated people out there. Probably frustrated from seeing the Jonas Brothers pesky appearances everywhere (except on channel 8, of course).
